Shirley Gardner, affectionately known as “buttercup, honey babe and onion” age 74 of Philadelphia, passed away surrounded by her family on Wednesday, August 2, 2017. She was born to the late Thomas Daniels Sr. and the late Joyce Hedgepeth.

Shirley attended Saint Elizabeth Grammar School, Lawnside Middle School, where she also attended High School.  She was a long-time member of Tenth Memorial Baptist Church, and most recently attended Enon Tabernacle Baptist Church.

Shirley’s children, her grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were her passion and delight. She grew up spending every weekend in Lawnside New Jersey, with her Grandmother Georgia Moore, and Aunts, Helen, Maddie, Martha, and Vernell, and Uncles, Joe, Milton, Nor Sr, and Jack.

Shirley is survived by her siblings Thomas Daniels, Jr., Lettie Hedgepeth, David Hedgepeth, Jr., and Sheila Moore who was like a sister to her.  Her brothers John & Bruce Daniels preceded her in death.

Shirley loved to cook, pleasing her family with her famous home cooking of potato salad, fried chicken, macaroni tuna salad, collard greens, sweet potato pie, and her world-famous pasta salad.  She enjoyed sitting down for a game of cards or Pokeno.

When she needed a quiet moment all the grands had to sit quiet while she watched ‘her stories.”

Everyone knew Shirley as the ‘unofficial neighborhood watch.”  If you needed to know, Shirley was in the know!

Shirley leaves to mourn many members of her loving family.  James Price, Sr. and John Blocker, her children, Cherylann Gardner, preceded by death, her son, Wayne Moore, Ava Gardner, Darryl A. Gardner (daughter in law. Brigitte), James Price, Jr (daughter in law Kelli).

She also leaves behind grandchildren, Shawn, Joyce, Dayrell, Shirley, Precious, Sherie, Darryl- II, Dwayne, Jaynell, Taylor, Thomas, Taneisha, Meadow, and Ny’ssia.

Great grandchildren, Shamod, Jayden, Day’Nair, Tarik-Jr., Day’Quan, Kay’mya, and Memphis.

Shirley was significant to so many, by whom many called mom, including Crystal, Tanya, Tyra and Wanda.    She also leaves behind numerous relatives and friends.

Shirley requested a private burial. The family wishes to thank everyone for their prayers and condolences.

Mom & Brigitte

Dear Mom,

Words cannot express the magnitude of what you have been too me. You became my mother in law through marriage, but for the past 27 years you have been 'mom.'

I thank you for your constant support, abundance and overwhelming extension of love, your delicious collards, potato salad, and sweet potatoe pie, that you would make for me any time I had a taste for your home cooking.

I am eternally grateful to you for always, always looking out for my children, two of your grandchildren who you helped mold into the wonderful adults they are today.  It is because of you!  You have been there from the beginning; showing us, guiding us, and loving us.  Teaching us about the unconditonal love of Family

You have made me laugh with your expressions, your stories, and for always telling me to 'watch my pocketbook!' I will miss your voice, and always ending our telephone calls, with...  love you!'

Rest peacefully now mom, you deserve your paradise.  I will miss you beyond words, but I will have you in my heart forever.

Love,

Brigitte
