Barbara Parrott McGinity
August 21 1951 - February 7 2016

Barbara Parrott McGinity was a force of nature and worked tirelessly at any job she was given or cause that touched her heart.  Because of her outgoing and buoyant personality, Barbara maintained a wide scope of supportive friends she considered her family.  She lived her life to the fullest and embraced all aspects of life in Houston from the arts to area sports.

Barbara entered this world on August 21, 1951, and left it suddenly and unexpectedly on February 7, 2016.   In the intervening years, there was never a wasted moment as Barbara drew upon her boundless energy to pack every moment of her life with the things she was most passionate about – wine (she enjoyed a 23-year association with the Houston Wine Merchant), travel, anything associated with UH, the Houston sports scene, and the performing arts.  Barbara loved life and lived it to the fullest.

Born and raised in Houston, Barbara grew up in Spring Branch.  She received a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from the University of Houston in 1974, a Masters degree in College Student Personnel in 1978 from Western Illinois University, and a Master’s degree in Social Work (MSW) from the University of Houston in 2000.   As Program Director for the Better Business Bureau Education Foundation, she focused on issues related to the financial exploitation of elders and managed the Texas Senior Medicare Patrol Grant.  She also served on the Board of the UH graduate School of Social Work Alumni Association for eleven years and was currently serving as Treasurer.  Barbara’s passion for area theater led to her position as President for Theater LaB Houston. In addition, she was Secretary for the FBI Citizens Academy Alumni Board and a Houston Proud Volunteer where she served in numerous leadership positions and met her soul mate and the love of her life, Mike McGinity.

Barbara’s enthusiastic support for the University of Houston was manifested in her status as a Life Member of the UH Alumni Association.  A Cougar Pride Member since 1987, Barbara was a season ticket holder of UH football, basketball, baseball and theater events. She was also a Member of the 1927 Society and 46er’s.   In May, Barbara is to be honored by the UH Alumni Association as the 2015 Outstanding Alumni Volunteer.

Predeceased by her father, Robert “Red” Parrott, Barbara leaves behind her loving husband, Michael Leo McGinity; her mother, Alice Parrott Zumsteg; and her aunt Margaret Badeaux. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

An "event" to celebrate Barbara's life will be held this spring.

A scholarship fund has been established at the UH Graduate School of Social Work. Memorial contributions may be directed to:
